The Loons and the Kentucky Derby?

derbyloons.jpgSo what does Loons baseball have to do with the Kentucky Derby? Well, I know the current Loons players would love the chance to play for Los Angeles Dodgers manager Joe Torre, but it probably won’t happen this season because it’s still early in their careers and most of them are only a little older than 20 years old.

But at the Kentucky Derby, Saturday, May 1, a three-year-old will be playing for Torre.

A three-year-old colt to be more specific. That’s right, Torre is a co-owner of racehorse Homeboykris, who will be racing from the 19th post position. Despite being trained by Rick Dutrow Jr., who trained Big Brown to a Derby win in 2008, ‘Kris is currently a long-shot to win, with 50-1 odds.

So if you can’t decide on which horse to root for, go with the Loons pick: Homeboykris.

Linked here is a video of Torre explaining how horse racing is harder than baseball.
Linked here is a very informative piece by the New York Times about how Don Zimmer started Torre’s interest in horses. The article is what tipped me off to Torre’s involvement with the colt.

And if you need your arm twisted a little more, then check out Homeboykris’ jockey silks here, which kind of resemble these Michigan hockey silks here. Maybe a stretch.

If I were a gambling man: $1 Superfecta Box 1-2-8-16. Take it to the bank.
And so not to leave out ‘Kris, I’d also get a $2 Quinella 1-19.
